The Myth of the Recycled Flag:
Why 'Green' Polyester is Still Grey

The flag and banner industry consumes millions of meters of polyester every year. We believe there's a better way — and it starts at the very origin of the material.

Our hemp comes from Uttarakhand, India. A mountain state at the foot of the Himalayas, where hemp grows naturally on small family farms. The soil and climate are ideal. No artificial fertilizer. No irrigation. Just a plant that has been part of this landscape for centuries.

But there's something bigger at play.

A Silent Crisis in the Mountains

Uttarakhand is facing a silent crisis: mass out-migration from rural communities to urban centers. Over 1,700 villages have been fully or largely abandoned in recent decades. Agricultural land is left barren. Traditional knowledge disappears along with the people.

Reverse Migration: Giving People a Reason to Stay

Hemp farming reverses this process. The crop grows on degraded soil and actively restores its fertility. It gives small farming families a stable, fair income — without having to leave their village. This is what the Hemp Foundation calls Reverse Migration: giving people a reason to stay.

By sourcing our hemp here, we pay a fair price directly to the farmers at the beginning of our supply chain. From field to flag — fully traceable, fully natural.

More Than a Flag

That's why a Hemptex®️ flag isn't just 100% natural and fully biodegradable. It directly contributes to the livelihoods of Himalayan farming communities.

At Better Flags, we deliberately choose materials with a story. Our Hemptex®️ option is made with this hemp.
