The Myth of the Recycled Flag: Why "Green" Polyester is Still Grey

Flags are curious things. We use them to signal our identity, celebrate our freedom, and increasingly, to showcase our commitment to a better world. Walk past any festival, corporate headquarters, or construction site today, and you will see flags waving proudly.

But there is a silent paradox flapping in the wind.

As we strive to make our events and businesses more sustainable, the very symbol we use to communicate these values is often working against us. For years, the industry’s answer to sustainability has been rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate)—flags made from old plastic bottles.

On paper, it sounds perfect. You take waste, turn it into a flag, and give it a second life. But when you look closer at the science of outdoor textiles, the story of the "green flag" begins to unravel.

The Problem: Environmental Confetti

A flag’s life is hard. It battles UV radiation, rain, and most importantly, wind. This friction causes the fabric to shed. Research shows that a standard polyester flag can lose up to 25% of its weight during its lifespan.

When a flag is made of rPET (recycled plastic), those shed fibers are still plastic. They are just recycled plastic.

We call this "Environmental Confetti."

Unlike a plastic bottle that can be collected and recycled again, a flag is an open system. It doesn’t wait to be discarded to pollute; it pollutes while it is being used. Every time it snaps in the wind, it releases thousands of microplastics into the soil, the waterways, and eventually, our own food chain. Using old bottles to create new microplastics isn't a solution; it's just delaying the pollution.

Nature’s Logic, Applied to Science

At Better Flags, we believe that if you cannot stop a flag from shedding, you must change what it sheds into.

This is why we moved away from the industry standard of rPET and chose CiCLO® technology. We didn't want to just recycle the problem; we wanted to solve it.

CiCLO® is not a coating. It is a sustainable additive embedded into the molecular structure of the fiber itself. It acts as a "nutrient" for microbes. When a Better Flag eventually reaches the end of its life and ends up in a biologically active environment—like soil, wastewater sludge, or the ocean—nature takes over.

Microbes recognize the material not as plastic, but as a food source, breaking it down just like they would decompose wool or cotton.

The Comparison: A Tale of Two Flags

We often assume that "recycled" equals "sustainable." But when it comes to flags that wear down in the wind, the difference lies in what they leave behind.

1. Recycled PET (rPET)

  • Origin: Made from old plastic bottles.
  • In the Wind: As it wears, it sheds plastic microfibers.
  • End of Life: The material persists in the environment indefinitely.
  • The Impact: Creates permanent microplastic pollution ("Environmental Confetti").

2. Better Flags (CiCLO®)

  • Origin: Made from high-grade polyester infused with CiCLO® technology.
  • In the Wind: Sheds fibers that behave like natural materials (wool/cotton).
  • End of Life: Biodegrades in approximately 3-4 years* after disposal.
  • The Impact: Leaves zero persistent microplastics behind.

*Biodegradation occurs in anaerobic, biologically active environments (like landfill, soil, or seawater).

Transform Visibility into Responsibility

Choosing a flag is no longer just about color and contrast. It is a choice about legacy.

If you hoist a flag to celebrate your company’s green goals, but that flag leaves a permanent trace of plastic in the nature surrounding your office, the message is hollow.

Better Flags offers a new standard. It looks the same, feels the same, and prints with the same vibrancy as the flags you are used to. But it behaves differently where it counts. It allows you to fly your colors without compromising your conscience.

We invite you to stop celebrating with plastic. Let’s leave no trace.
